12 new varieties added to spring wheat and minor cereal lists
Two spring wheats and a couple of spring oats are among the 12 new additions to the AHDB’s minor cereal variety lists.
Starting with spring wheat, the two new options are a high-yielding Group 2 and an early maturing Group 4 type, neither of which have orange wheat blossom midge resistance.
Mylo from LSPB has a treated yield of 103% and very good disease resistance, including a 9 for yellow rust and 8s for brown rust and mildew. It also has a high Hagberg of 297 and a grain protein of 13.3%.

The other – which is expected to be named Everlong – is from Cope Seeds. Currently known as SEW19-3003SW, it is another variety still to be added to the GB and NI variety lists in spring 2024.
Out in front in the Group 4 category with a very high yield of 107%, it has a -1 for ripening.
Two new spring oats feature this year – a husked variety and a described naked oat.
Husked oat Asterion from Saaten Union has a treated yield of 102% and an untreated yield of 97%, along with promising grain quality data. It sits just behind Merlin on the list.
Naked oat Ovation from Senova has a treated yield of 73%, slightly below Oliver, but is notable for its untreated yield of 68% and early ripening of -2.
Five new winter rye varieties – Gilmour, Astranos, Inspirator, Perspectiv and Karlsson – have been described, as have three winter triticale varieties – Eleac, Askadus and Brehat.
