Senova’s high yielding spring bean variety Boxer has now received National Listing and can be added to the PGRO Recommended List of spring beans with immediate effect.

Boxer, which was provisionally recommended last year but couldn’t be added until it was eligible for marketing, has a yield of 110%, putting it 3% ahead of Pyramid and giving it a 5% yield advantage over Fuego.

A pale hilum type, Boxer has similar maturity and straw length to Fuego, as well as good standing ability, making it a natural step forward for growers, believes Senova’s commercial director Jeremy Taylor.

“Boxer takes spring bean yields up to the next level,” he points out. “It also has the agronomic characters that farmers are looking for, including a downy mildew resistance rating of 5.”

Spring beans have been one of the best performing crops in a difficult year for most, he continues. “It’s not surprising that there’s so much interest in the crop at the moment. The market is ready for a new variety, especially one which offers further yield improvement without compromising its management in the field.

“Furthermore, Boxer’s seed size and skin colour will make it attractive to the export market.”

Continued unsettled weather, with associated delays to autumn cultivations and drilling, means that Boxer is available in time to help add extra profit to spring bean growing, he ends.
