Scottish OSR affected by late frost

Harvest is going slowly for Sandy Alison near Edinburgh, as rain continues to fall today (Aug 23). Oilseed rape yields were variable, having been affected by late frost, and the most promising early flowering crop was affected worse.

Triangle yields were from under 2.5t/ha to over 4.5t/ha, but the average was not good and “not paying for itself”, he said. Despite this, the crop was much better than last year, although was not good compared to normal.

Mr Alison has cut 40ha of Consort winter wheat since yesterday (Aug 22), although he said it is not really ripe. Moisture is at 21% and yields are around 10.5 – 14.5t/ha.

Harvest progress is ahead of last year, but behind where he would like it to be, he added.
