Just under way in Kent

Harvest progress is about average in Kent, according to Francesca Lewis at Weald Granary.

“We don’t envisage it being busy until the beginning of August; it will be about 10 days before we see any wheat,” she said.

Oilseed rape was coming in at 8-10% moisture, and so far barley samples were not looking great.

“The germination is alright, but I’m not sure about the crop itself. The grain is very small and it’s not a brilliant sample.”

Before the rain arrived, farmers were forecasting a 5-30% reduction in yield, she added.

“Some people have said yields will be alright, while others have lost a whole crop. If the rain doesn’t hold off now, I just wonder if we’re going to get more problems with fusarium and mycotoxins.”
