Disappointed at Coldstream Farm
Jim Cargill has finished cereal harvest at Coldstream Farm, Fettercairn, Aberdeenshire, but is disappointed with yields.
“We finished on Monday (6 September) and it has rained ever since then, so we finished just in time. But yields weren’t very exciting.”
Robigus and Alchemy winter wheat averaged around 8.6t/ha (3.5t/acre), with late sown Robigus doing particularly poorly.
Optic spring barley came in at 6.4t/ha (2.6t/acre) and all went for malting, he said.
Sequel and Retriever winter barley level pegged, at about 8.6t/ha (3.5t/acre).
“There are still bits of wheat and barley to cut in the area. Some of the later spring barley has been slow to ripen.”
Mr Cargill had started lifting potatoes for a neighbour, and hoped to start on his own soon. “But we need some dry weather now.”
