Considering nitrogen options for your winter wheat in 2022?

The SMART ROTATIONS range is produced by the PlantWorks science team in the UK under highly controlled conditions and includes both beneficial bacteria and mycorrhizal fungi.

Calling all farmers with winter wheat in the ground and considering their nitrogen options in 2022.

With over a million pounds of investment and eight years of research on UK farms, research institutes and with agronomic partners SMART ROTATIONS SR3 WHEAT selected bacteria is a solution that is ready for spring application 2022.

SR3 WHEAT is a tuned consortia of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) selected and tuned over a rigorous program of research and development and is applied in liquid form when the soil temperature is above 10 degrees and sprayed directly to ground with a course droplet sprayer at the G25-31.

Grown in pharmaceutical bioreactors at the PlantWorks’ facilities at the Kent Science parks, SR3 is not a compost tea, but rather a highly pure bacteria blend that is packaged at the peak of the bacterial growth cycle and then extracted in a buffer solution to hold the bacteria in its most potent phase for application on farm.

With initial research and development validating yield effects post application of SR3 Wheat of an average of 6% over controls across trials in the UK, in 2019, pre the current ‘nitrogen bubble’, a re-search objective was set to investigate the tolerance these nitrogen fixing bacteria can offer a crop to soil applied nitrogen reduction.

Trials in various location correlated to confirm that SR3 Wheat applied in spring act to improve nitrogen use efficiency in winter wheat allowing for significant reduction of nitrogen in the range of 80-70%.

At a cost of £20 a hectare SR3 return a strong return on investment (ROI) in 2019, post the dramatic rise of nitrogen costs these returns are now considerably higher and relevant to all farmers with winter wheat in the ground.

Interestingly trials results show that spring wheat responds better at 100% nitrogen application with SR3.

The increased NUE delivers greater energy to the crops during critical early growth stages where the nitrogen is needed in the process of cellular growth for both shoot and roots development.

SR3 Wheat is very stable and can survive in its packaged form at room temperature of over a year, offering the opportunity to treat both winter and the follow on spring wheat if required.

The SR3 range of beneficial bacteria now embraces both major cereal crops and vegetables with potatoes and carrots showing particularly strong response to bacterial application in relation to yield, crop size variance and health.
