Fodder beet variety both winter hardy and high yielding

One fodder beet variety has proved to be both winter hardy and high yielding in recent trials.

Blizzard produced nearly 1.4/ha more dry matter than the average of eight varieties in a trial carried out by Limagrain last year.

The trial found Blizzard yielded 16t/ha of DM – 13% more than the trial average – and had a high DM content of 23%.

In addition to this high dry matter content, the high percentage of root growth underground makes it more resistant to frost and winter damage, says Limagrains’s Martin Titley.

“The high DM content means this variety will withstand freezing temperatures better than lower DM varieties and also keep better in the clamp through winter, reducing wastage.”
