Pleasing wheat at Gosmere
Bill Harbour has finished combining oilseed rape and is now into winter wheat at Gosmere Farm, Sheldwich, Kent.
So far the 16ha (40 acres) of Solstice was yielding very well at over 11t/ha (4.5t/acre) at 13-16% moisture.
“We started cutting it on Friday (30 July) but it was damp over the weekend so didn’t get back into it until yesterday (2 August),” he said.
“It is a really good colour and should have a high protein content.” Bushelweights were good at 79kg/hl. “We are very pleased.”
Palmedor high erucic acid oilseed rape, desiccated on 9 July, yielded an unexciting 3.4t/ha (1.4t/acre).
Mr Harbour now had 154ha (380 acres) of Solstice, Xi19, Gallant, and Panorama winter wheat to cut, followed by a small acreage of Barrie spring wheat.
“We’ll also have peas ready to cut next week. So far it all looks fairly good.”
