James Chamberlain finished most of his harvest at Glebe Farm, Shardlow, Derbyshire, last week, but still has three parcels of land that are too wet to cut.

“It’s been really challenging,” he said. “There are just two bits of barley and one of wheat that we can’t get at with the combine – it just keeps sinking.

“It’s not a huge area, but it’s several hundreds of pounds worth of crop which we can’t get.”

Solstice wheat on light land performed reasonably well, at 8t/ha and 72kg/hl, with Gallant yielding 7.5t/ha at 70kg/hl. “The light land has definitely been better this year.”

Waggon and Quench spring barley, grown for seed, did 7t/ha, which was quite pleasing given that it had brackled over, said Mr Chamberlain.

“It was quite a bright sample, so I’m optimistic that it will achieve its intended market.”

But Fashion and Excalibur oilseed rape was less exciting, ranging from 3t to 4t/ha and averaging about 3.4t/ha.

“It was just a lacklustre year due to the lack of sun – they were leggy crops with just no seed. Thank goodness the price is good.”

With nothing drilled so far, Mr Chamberlain expected to sow more Fashion and Excalibur this week.
