Driers needed at Trenewydd Fawr
Heavy thunderstorms have caused flooding in Pembrokeshire, but surprisingly the combine is rolling at Meurig Raymond’s Trenewydd Fawr, Haverfordwest.
“There is flooding 20 miles East of us, but luckily we’ve been alright,” he said. “The forecast isn’t good, and although it is still very wet we’re combining today (6 August).”
So far he had cut about a quarter of the oilseed rape and winter barley, with yields coming in about average.
“The Dimension and Rhino rapeseed are struggling to make 3.7t/ha, and the feed barley is almost at 7.4t/ha, with a bushel weight of 67kg/hl.”
Maris Otter, which had made the malting grade at 1.55% nitrogen, yielded about 5t/ha.
“We’ve got about 40ha that really needs to come off now, but there is some that still isn’t fully ripe. We’ll be drying what we’re cutting today for the next three days.”
Mr Raymond also had 134ha of PR46W21 oilseed rape which was lying in the swath. “It looks pretty good. We want a dry week to wrap it all up before the spring barley, which also looks well,” he said.
“But I’m not as confident about the wheat – there are a lot of blind sites.”
