John Deere has launched a cheaper version of its Gator utility vehicle aimed at lighter users and the leisure market.

The XUV 550 has a fully sealed two-stage CVT transmission and a top speed of 45kph, but the only engine option is a 16hp petrol V-twin.

Carrying capacity in the tipping rear body is 181kg and it has a 499kg towing capacity.

The 550 is available in single or double cab format and both are fitted with independent double arm suspension front and rear.

Prices have not yet been released, but Deere says it will be considerably cheaper than the base 855d, which starts from £11,578.

Both models should be available in April.
