Farmers Weekly’s complete guide to battery-powered loaders

With performance figures to match their diesel-fuelled stablemates, the growing number of battery-electric loaders now available to farmers provides a quieter, more economical and potentially more environmentally friendly alternative, whatever type of loader design they favour.

And more are on their way; at last year’s Agritechnica, Dieci with the Mini Agri-e 26.6 and Claas (via its manufacturing partner Liebherr) with the Scorpion 732e revealed battery-electric prototypes, as did Merlo with the full-size TFe 43.7, which is destined to complement the firm’s ultra-compact eWorker.

Manitou subsequently previewed a battery-electric MLT 625e agricultural telehandler, which seems likely to have some spec differences from the MT construction version introduced last year.

Bobcat has separately revealed battery-electric wheeled and tracked skid-steer loaders to come, while both Ausa and Faresin have electric telehandlers on sale, albeit focused on the construction sector.

Features common to most of the machines detailed here include energy recovery with a trailing accelerator and when braking, and an automatic parking brake for both security and its hill-hold function.

Note: All lift heights measured to the bucket pivot pin. Lift height and overall width dependent on the tyres fitted.

The KL25.5e’s propulsion motor drives via a dropbox and prop shafts to both axles, a locking front-axle differential helps with traction, and the machine has Kramer’s signature circle four-wheel steering on a rigid chassis.

Buyers get a choice of loader arm lengths for maximum breakout force or maximum lift height, with prices starting at £130,403 from Kramer dealers.

Kubota RT210-2e/RT220-2e

The newly introduced Kubota RT compact loader is available with a choice of two front-end configurations, one focused on lift height, the other on load capacity.

Additional counter-weights are available to increase the standard lift performance of both models, and loader arm suspension is available to minimise spillages or unseating loads on rough ground.

For the operator, there are fixed canopy, foldable canopy and enclosed cab options, with the foldable canopy allowing a temporary reduction in height for situations where overhead clearance through doorways or beneath roof trusses is limited.

Prices start at £56,000 for an RT210-2e with canopy from Kubota dealers.

Schaeffer Electric 23e

The Schaffer 23e introduced in 2017 remains the manufacturer’s sole compact wheeled loader with battery-electric power other than the telescopic version introduced this year.

It comes with 15.6kWh or 31.3kWh battery packs with a 3kW on-board charger for an 80% top-up over eight hours from a 230V, 16A mains supply. A faster-charging wall box option reduces that to just over two hours.

Eco drive mode helps extend the energy supply when full power is not needed and mounting the 21kW drive motor directly to the rear axle is said to achieve maximum power efficiency.

Prices are from £56,699 via distributor H Fulton Tractors.

Smaller and larger models than the Elise 900 have 700kg and 1,200kg rated lift capacities and use the same electric motor ground drive; as an option, all can be operated remotely via a phone app or dedicated control unit.

Prices start at £80,000, and FirstGreen Industries’ distributor is Zero Emission Machinery.
