Lamma: Indian tractor could be a bargain
The UK tractor market is awash with sub-100hp tractors, and any potential purchasers could have another manufacturer to add to the ever-growing list.
Sonalika is an Indian tractor company based in the Punjab region in the north of the country and it has some pretty credible sales figures. Annual tractor production totals 90,000 units, which are exported across the world and the maker also produces its own engines, transmissions and drivelines.
That’s a different approach to several other low-horsepower tractor manufacturers already in the UK. Indian-owned Farmtrac, for instance, chooses to purchase its main tractor-making ingredients from well-known parts makers like Perkins and Carraro.

According to Sonalika, it means the tractors can be made even cheaper – the 90hp Solis model shown on the stand is priced at about £19,000 and has a 4.1-litre, four-pot engine under the bonnet. At the back it will lift 2.5t and the hydraulic pump will push out 45-litres/min. You can order an MX-made loader for the front, too – the company has a factory in India.
Despite making all of the components itself the manufacturer still claims to carry considerable pedigree. In the past it has produced Renault, and later Claas, tractors for the Indian market and works closely with Japanese engine maker Yanmar on product development.
Sonalika also points to the growing number of Indian-based agricultural machinery factories as proof the country is churning out quality products.
