Ineos goes electric with smaller Fusilier off-roader

Ineos Automotive has announced that a third model will be joining its line-up of off-roaders, to be powered by fully electric or range-extender electric drivetrains.

Dubbed the Fusilier, it will sit on a “skateboard” style battery chassis with an electric motor driving each axle.

This makes it a very different beast to the Grenadier 4×4 and Quartermaster pickup, both of which are built around a traditional ladder chassis.

The Fusilier will have aluminium doors and enclosures, though, attached to a steel underbody and frame.

Ineos hasn’t released any official performance figures, but it’s clear that range-extender models will have a smaller battery pack and lower, electric-only range.

However, the addition of a small petrol engine should remove the need to stop and plug in on longer drives.

Development of the Fusilier has been carried out in conjunction with Austrian outfit Magna, which will also be manufacturing the vehicle. More details and launch timings are expected later in the year.

Electric isn’t the only alternative fuel being explored by Ineos, with the launch of a demonstrator hydrogen fuel cell Grenadier last year.

The firm says this vehicle is ready to go into production, but better refuelling infrastructure needs to be in place before it is commercially viable.
