Borderway rare cattle and sheep breeds sale tops at £2,310

Longhorn cattle sold to a top price of £1,650 at Borderway Mart’s rare breed sale on Saturday (17 September).

Leading trade was the heifer Wellhead Original from Nicky Luckett, Wigton, Cumbria.

Sired by Raincliffe Harry, she is out of a home-bred dam and sold in-calf to Llantrothy Kestral. Buyer was Susan Aglionby, Houghton, Carlisle.

Next best and selling for £1,100 was local vendor Colin Hughes, from Wigton, with his 2013-born cow Croftlands Nora, sired by Blackden Jim 22750/J0943 and out of Clonyard Ada 18820/J0407.

She sold to Annie Auchine, Huntly, Aberdeenshire, with her August-born steer calf at foot and having been served to Frondeg Lion.

Dexter cattle peaked at £1,050 for the March 2015-born bull Planetree Saturn from Steve and Kay Darnbrook, Bailey, Newcastleton.

Sired by Planetree Apollo he is out of Planetree Hermione. Buyer was JF Kemp, New Abbey, Dumfries.

White Park cattle sold to £750 for the home-bred four-year-old cow Ribblesdale Teresa F9546 and her heifer calf Ribblesdale Daisy F11654, from DE Graveston, Clitheroe, Lancashire.

They were the pick of Pear Tree Projects, Heighington, Darlington.

Just shy of this at £700 and leading Belted Galloway trade was the March 2014-born Askerton Miranda, sired by Park Hadrian and out of a Askerton Gaby, from JR Eden, Brampton, Cumbria.

She sold to W Mitchell and Sons, Newton Mearns, Glasgow, having been served to Askerton Belted Will.

Meanwhile, in the sheep ring, rare breeds sold to a top price of £2,310.

Leading sales in the Valais Blacknose category were two ewes from S Kennedy, Lyonpark, Maybole, Ayrshire.

Carrying embryos out of Blairmore Berne VBN0335 and sired by Tip Top Abercrombie, both are due in  December and have been scanned carrying twins.

They sold for £2,310 each to V Cartner, Blackwoodridge House, Waterbeck, Lockerbie.

Meanwhile, in the Kerry Hill category a ram lamb from RJ and DJ Price, Pentrenant Farm, Churchstoke, Montgomery, Powys, led sales.

It went to E Boocock, Freebrough Farm, Moorsholm, Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Cleveland, for £1,100.

In the Wensleydale section, JN and SM Prescott, West End Farm, Longhorsley, Northumberland, took £630 for a 2015-born shearling ram.

Sired by Thistle Duke 7286, it went home with J Melville and Sons, Ardwell Farm, Girvan, Ayrshire.

In the Border Leicester sale, the top price of £550 was a bid for shearling ram Solway BL966 from R and S Ker, Justinlees Farm, Annan, Dumfriesshire.

It went to S and A Bland and Barker, Dalefoot, Askham, Penrith, Cumbria.

Meanwhile, Jacobs sold to a high of £580, with February 2016-born ram lamb Kinloch Frodo from M Munro, Kinloch Farm, Ladybank, Fife, taking the top price.

Out of a Kinloch ewe and sired by Blackbrook Fire Balls, it sold to M Leggate, Stramolloch Farm, Chapleton, Strathaven, Lanarkshire.
