Working sheepdogs sell to 7,200gns at Skipton

A record entry of 142 working dogs sold to a top price of 7,200gns (£7,560) at Skipton Auction Mart’s annual summer sale of sheepdogs last week (22 July).

The day’s top price went to North Craven’s Shaun Richards, Eldroth, with a two-year-old tri-coloured bitch, Nell, by renowned trials winner Knockmaa Jack, from Michael Hynes in Belclare, County Galway, and out of David Nevin’s Jan.

Nell produced a litter of pups three months ago and Mr Richards has retained two, a bitch and a dog.

Nell was purchased by Scottish Borders hill farmer Niel Manning, Tweedsmuir, near Moffat.

Mr Richards made 3,600gns with a November 2014-born black-and-white bitch, Dot, bred by Cumbria’s Arthur Temple, by his Whiterose Flint, out of Jill. She sold to an undisclosed Welsh buyer.

Second-best price on the day went to another Nel, from Welsh triallist Kevin Evans, Brecon, Powys. Bred by Ifan Jones’s Carlo, out of Alan Jones’s Mona, she was knocked down to Jock Sutherland, Sangomore, near Durness, for 4,100gns.

Mr Evans also made 3,400gns when selling his January 2015-born black-and-white bitch Sheba (Sky), acquired from Ireland. She is by FMC McGuigan’s Fleet, out of John Kinney’s Jan and sold to David and Victoria Hill, Great Asby, Appleby.

Another 4,000gns performer was another Nel, this one a September 2014-born black-and-white bitch from Brian Quigley, of Culmore, Derry. Already placed in nursery trials, she is bred by James McGee, Creggan, Ireland, and is out of Mr Quigley’s own Cindy. Buyer was Joe McRoberts, near Biggar, Lanarkshire.

Just shy of this and making 3,900gns was Neidin, a tri-coloured fully home-bred dog, aged almost four years old, from John Brennan, County Tipperary. By Glen and out of the Dunedin Gem daughter Dell, he sold to County Antrim’s Michael Gallagher.

Two dogs made 3,200gns. First was Roy, a November 2014-born dog from M Healey, County Kerry. He sold to an undisclosed Oxfordshire farmer.

The second at this money was JA Common, Lockerbie, with his June 2014-born black-and-white bitch Loos. Buyer was Michael Jones, Conwy.
