Salers lead pedigree beef offering at Carlisle

A handful of native Saler, Hereford and South Devon bull sold to a good trade at the pedigree beef day special spring sale last week (22 May).

The sole entry in the Saler section was the highest-hitting of all three breeds when selling to 3,200gns.

This price was paid by  J Steele and Son, Lanark for Rigel Lewis from Rigel Pedigree, Yarm. He is sired by Amazonien Imp and is out of Rigel Leto Pye.

Meanwhile Hereford bulls peaked at 3,000gns for Barwise 1 Kioti from Carolyn Fletcher, Appleby-in-Westmoorland, Cumbria. Born in February 2013 he is sired by Dendor 1 Goblin and goes back to bull of the year Barwise 1 Wellington. He sold to PJ and B Miller, Penrith, Cumbria, with a TSI of +27 and SRI of +30.

Just shy of this at 2,900gns was Salton 1 Klinsman from GT Bulmer, Salton, York. Sired by FS 1 Clint he is out of Salton 1 Maddie and has won a string of trophies. Buyer was Barker Farms, Moffat, Dumfriesshire.

Female Herefords topped 2,200gns for Romany 1 Mink R22 E25 from G and MC Shepherd, Preston. Sired by Crickley 1 Figurehead she is out of the Free Town Longfellow daughter Romany 1 Julia and sold with her Moorside 1 Kingston sired bull calf at foot. Buyer was Muirton Grange, Myton On Swale, York.

Two South Devon bulls averaged ÂŁ2,257. Topping this small section was Enterprise Avalon from David Irving, Thornhill, Dumfriesshire.

Sired by Enterprise Cointreau he is out of Enterprise Ava. He was the pick of D and W Bowman, Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire, having won several shows.

Averages: Four Hereford bulls, ÂŁ2,362.50; two Hereford cows with calves at foot, ÂŁ2,310; one Saler bull, ÂŁ3,360 and two South Devon bulls, ÂŁ2,257.50.
