Royal Highland Winter Fair 2012: Commerial Cattle Championship

Comm calf - baby beef web.jpgHeifers reigned supreme in the commercial calf championship with top honours awarded to 395kg Banrigh Innse Ghall from the RSPB Islay.

This heifer is by Charolais Allanfauld Amazon and out of a Limousin cross. Handled by farm manager Eion Brown of Aoradh Farm, Ghall was reserve champion on her first outing to the Islay Show and will be sold today at the evening sale.

RSPB Islay, which has 200 spring calving Limousin cross Angus cows, won the same championship at the Royal Highland Winter Fair in 2009 with animal of the same breeding.

Commenting on his champion, judge Mark Ross of Wester Middleton said: “She is a very correct heifer with a good top line and she handled well. She was an out and out champion.”

Mr Ross chose his second place heifer over the first prize winning steers for his overall reserve spot. 390kg Molly Malone from E Macpherson and Sons is by a Charolais and out of a Limousin cross and was bred by Martin Harold, County Donegal.

Explaining his decision Mr Ross said the reserve was better from shoulders to ribs over the Limousins that were placed first.
