Royal Highland Show 2015: Beef results

Interbreed

Beating off 1,000 cattle in a closely fought out contest in the beef ring and winning the prestigious beef championship prize was a native five-year-old Aberdeen Angus bull.

Shadwell Black Broughton K485 from father and son team Alistair and Graeme Fraser, Forfar, and shown by Fraser Cormack was awarded the prize by judge Jimmy Wilson who farms in Aberdeenshire.

Broughton who is by Muirhall Total Deal E009 and out of Shadwell Blackbird D181 was purchased from the Shadwell Aberdeen Angus herd by the Fraser family when he was under two years of age for a high five figure sum. Since then he has worked as a stock bull on the family’s 218ha farm where they run 60 Aberdeen cows alongside their arable operation.

This is the first time the Fraser family have shown at the Royal Highland Show, but did scoop champion of champions at the Kirriemuir Show with Broughton last year.

Graeme Fraser said Broughton had been a great stock bull with three crops of calves already on the ground and sons sold for five figure sums.

Describing his champion Mr Wilson said: “The Angus is full of meat from front to the hind quarters and as a five year old walks well. He also has great breed character.”

In reserve was the June 2013-born junior champion- the homebred Charolais bull Balthayock Imp from Major Walters, Perthshire. Shown by Davie and Tracey Nicholl Imp is sired by Blelack Forrester and out of Balthayock Christine.

This is the first time in more than forty years of showing Major Walters has ever won in the interbreed classes at the Highland, although he did win interbreed champion at the Angus show with Imp last year.
