VIDEO: Dust devil spotted at harvest
A Hampshire man has captured stunning images of a “dust devil” on camera during the wheat harvest.
Kevin Farndell, 63, spotted the rare natural phenomenon in farm fields at the back of his house.
The 45-second clip shows the moment the dust devil sucked up straw and sent it spiralling hundreds of feet into the air on a farm in Dummer, near Basingstoke.
Mr Farndell, who got covered in straw as he filmed the footage on his mobile phone, described the experience as “amazing”. He later uploaded the footage on his Facebook page and the video has been watched hundreds of times.
Dust devils form when hot air near the surface rises quickly through a small pocket of cooler, low-pressure air above. They typically do not cause injuries, but some severe dust devils have caused damage and even deaths in the USA.
