Checklist: How dairy farmers can get ready for EU milk scheme

The first deadline for the EU’s new milk supply scheme is just over a month away – but how can producers make sure they don’t miss out on this vital cash?

The scheme will pay farmers to reduce the volume of milk they produce in order to improve milk prices across the union.

Farmers will be paid 12p for every litre that they don’t produce, based on what they produced in 2015.

“Although some producers won’t agree with the scheme it’s important that those eligible do apply,” said NFU chief dairy advisor Sian Davies.

“Our advice is to plan ahead and get the application in early.”

Here’s an essential list compiled with the assistance of the NFU to help farmers prepare.

Farmers can choose to apply for one of four three-month periods. These are:

• Mid-September application for reduction in milk production between 1 October and 31 December. Deadline: 21 September
• Mid-October application for reduction in milk production between 1 November and 31 January. Deadline: 12 October
• Mid-November application for reduction in milk production between 1 December and 31 February. Deadline: 9 November
• Mid-December application for reduction in milk production between 1 January and 31 March. Deadline: 7 December
