Charolais and South Devon cattle sell to 3,700gns
Females sold to a top price of 3,700gns and bulls reached at the Martland herd dispersal sale on behalf of John and Caroline Wlyde, Woolavington, Somerset, at Exeter Livestock Centre on Friday (6th May).
Sale leader at 3,700gns was a cow and calf outfit. The 2010-born Martland Flower sired by Moynton Carlton and her three-month-old heifer calf Martland Mayflower, sired by Doonally Olmeto, found a new home with DC Crosier, Middlezoy, Bridgewater.
Just behind at 3,400gns was a split pair. The four-year-old Blelack Digger daughter Culmvale Honey TI +55 SRI +55 caught the eye of DP and B Smith, Dingestow, Monmouthshire, who later purchased two more lots. Meanwhile her seven-month-old son, Martland Lincoln, sired by Blakestown Trustee, was purchased by T Gaden, Stow on the Wold, Glocestershire.
Another split lot sold for a total of 3,000gns with the Tolland Universe daughter Champflower Cilla, bred by F Evens, Taunton, Somerset, going to Jane Haw, Dorchester, Dorset. Her July-2915 born heifer calf Martland Legacy sired by Skysea Fearless was purchased by L Darch, Chard, Somerset.
The eight young bulls on offer met with a ready trade and leading the bids at 3,500gns was the 14 month old Martland Leon TI +41 SRI +40, also sired by Skysea Fearless who goes on to work in Purton, Wiltshire with FR Crew.
Making 3,100gns was the September 2014-born Martland James, the man behind the money on this Liscally Eti ET son was K Tovey, Bishops Sutton, Bristol.
South Devons
The annual South Devon sale held by Midland Club breeders at Stratford market on Saturday (7 May) equalled Charolais trade at 3,700gns.
Selling for the day’s top price was was the Knowhill Dominator 2 (T), a young bull from the Knowhill stable of AE, J and FJ Claridge, Middle Clayden, Bucks. By Sexton Excalibur 7 and out of a Maple dam by Lumbylaw Duke 63, he sold for 3,700gns to C Warner, Ledbury, Herefordshire.
Just shy of this and selling for 3,600gns was the breed champion from the same stable, Knowlhill Ambassador 2. He was the pick of RJ Hopkins, Chippenham, Wiltshire.
Next highest priced bull was M E and T E Broome’s X Welland Valley Trident 11, sired by Z Welland Valley Trident 1. He sold to Mrs J Archer, North Tudenham, Norfolk for 2,800 gns.
Highest priced female was an August 2013 born heifer Coton Venus 18 from CJ Page, Banbury, Oxfordshire, by Brettles SAS Red Ensign. This heifer sold with a calf at foot to Mrs J Archer for 2,000 gns.
Averages: Charolais: Eight bulls, £2,783; 24 cows with calves, £2,254; 10 heifers, £1,323. South Devons: Eight bulls, £2,697; 25 heifers, £1,147.
