Lincoln reds top 5,000gns at Newark

A select offering of Lincoln Reds drew a solid trade at Newark on Saturday, with a packed ringside of new and established breeders out in force for the breed’s major autumn sales fixture.

Auctioneer Paul Gentry said the top end of the trade had been a good as expected, with a number of new breeders keen to acquire solid female foundation stock.

“A small entry of bulls were also well sold and there is no doubt the Lincoln Red breed is attracting a strong level of commercial interest from both local and national suckler farmers.”

Leading the prices at 5,000gns was the male champion from the pre-sale show, Hemingby Grainger from Mike Read. This Donnington Kavannah son is out of Hemingby Treasure M617, a Market Stainton Goodman daughter and was knocked down to the pre-sale judge P E A Wood.

Taking the second best price in the bulls at 2,500gns was the reserve male champion, Chestnut Tree Poacher from T Green. He is a son of Auchmacoy Lachlan out of Hundleby Brenda G4, a Beverley Dalesman daughter. He was bought by Messrs Gent, Peterborough.

Topping female trade was a 2300gns bid for Auchmacoy Ethel R165, an Auchmacoy Langworth daughter from S Buchan, Auchmacoy, Ellon, Aberdeenshire. This one is out of Market Stainton Ethel 8, a Hemingby Rhodes daughter. She sold to Messrs Spendlove Bros, Kettering.

Also heading to the same new home was the female champion from the pre-sale show, Auchmacoy Dot R168, another from Mrs Buchan. This one is nearly identically bred to the last, being another by Auchmacoy Langworth out of another Rhodes daughter, Market Stainton Dot 2.

Making 2100gns was Auchmacoy Heroine R180, again from Mrs Buchan’s Aberdeenshire-based herd. This Auchmacoy Langworth daughter is out of Walmer Heroine J9, a Stock Haven Richard daughter. She was bought by A and J Bambridge.

Just shy of that at 2000gns was Beverley Mary P70, a 2011-born heifer out of Beverley Mary J18, a St Fort Dickens daughter. Bred by Messrs Clough she sold having run with Donnington Legend and was taken home by Heathland Farms, Kings Lynn.

A total of five lots then sold at 1900gns, with the first of these being Walmer Lobelia P23, a Market Stainton Lancelot daughter from the Needler family. This one was bought by M E Williams.

Second at this money was Beverley Miss P61 from the Clough family. She is sired by Beverley Adventurer and had run with Donnington Legend. Buying her was Messrs Carrick, Norfolk. Also at 1900gns was her herdmate, Beverley Kelsie P62, another Adventurer daughter which had run with Legend. This one sold to W P D Holland and Son.

The same buyers then paid the same price for Beverley Miss P67. Again by Adventurer she was again sold having run with Legend. The final 1900gns bid was made by Messrs Spendlove for Westcarse Norah R12, a Beverley Henchman daughter from W A R Mallon.
