Alfords do Smithfield steer and heifer double win
Michael and Melanie Alford, Devon, have done a remarkable double here at Smithfield, taking both the steer and heifer titles.
Steer champion was their Limousin cross Hanky Panky. This is a November 2008 born steer bred by Smallburn Farms and by Bailea Oberon. Reserve steer was Elfed Williams with King Kong. This is another Lim cross and is by Powells Vagabond. He was bred by Andrew Powell.
Heifer champion was Lady Ga Ga, a British Blue cross by Netherwood Umpire and bred by Trefor Jones. Reserve heifer was Paul Walker with a homebred Limousin heifer New Edition. This is by Waindale UFO.
In a peverse decision there was no split on the heifers, with just one overall heifer championship awarded, this class of 20 heifers was some spectacle, but its a ludicrous situation and needs correcting ahead of next year.
In the steers the lightweight title went to Alistair and Liz Vance with Kaiser Chief, a Lim cross, reserve was Jennifer and Drew Hyslop with Tommy Zoom a Lim cross.
Intermediate steer was James Forsyth with Jay-Z, a Lim cross and reserve was Scott Innes with McTavish, an Angus cross. The heavy steer and reserve were the overall steer and reserve winners.
So, the Alfords are on to take the title the question is with which beast, my money is on the steer, but I’ve been wrong before..!
