Lincoln Reds hit new UK breed record of 9000gns
Lincoln Red breeders enjoyed a strong trade for bulls at Newark last weekend, where bidding peaked at a new UK record price of 9000gns.
Leading the trade was the junior champion Market Stainton King from Robert Needham’s herd at Market Stainton, Louth. By homebred sire George, this one is an April 2007-born son of Market Stainton Connie 5 who bred the spring show and sale champion in 2005. He was bought by Tony Mallon, Little Fransham, Norfolk for pedigree and commercial use.
Second best price of 5600gns was achieved for another from the Needham family, the senior male champion, Market Stainton Kinsman. Sired by Market Stainton George and out of Market Stainton Connie 1, Kinsman was shown twice last year when he stood overall champion at Woodhall Spa and reserve male champion at Lincolnshire. This well muscled entry sold to breed stalwarts R G Parkinson and Sons for their Donnington herd.
The Parkinsons then recouped some of their earlier outlay when they took the next best call of 3000gns for the best from their Donnington herd, Donington on Bain, Louth, Donnington Kavannah. This one is by Limestone Dunstan, who has sired females to 2300gns, and out of Donnington Jessie, an Anwick Augustus daughter. He was snapped up by Michael Read for his Hemingby herd.
Then at 2600gns the reserve senior champion, Walmer Joburg from Hedley Needler, Ranby, Louth, sold to Sir Richard Sutton’s Settled Estates. He is by Walmer Falcon and out of a Market Stainton Bonus sired dam.
Among the females on offer the top call was a 2500gns bid for Hemingby Treasure. This one is by St Fort Essex, a bull breeding exceptionally well for Mr Read, and out of a dam by the same name. This was a new maiden heifer record for the breed and sold to Michael Woodford for his recently established Springwood herd, Cold Overton.
And at 2100gns was Ivan and Martin Clough’s junior female champion Beverley Ella, a Beverley Adventurer daughter out of a Beverley Dalesman sired dam. January 2008-born Ella sold to C T H Charlton, Spalding , Lincolnshire.
Averages; 12 bulls ÂŁ3037, 50 females ÂŁ1569 (Newark Livestock Market).
