Tips on getting more from cover crops, new varieties and beating blackgrass feature in the crop plots at Cereals 2015.

The event returns to Boothby Graffoe in Lincolnshire on 10 and 11 June, and with hundreds of crop plots, AICC agronomist Peter Brumpton and HGCA technical manager Bill Handley give us a preview of what to see.

In its 50th year, the HGCA will be reflecting on how far the industry has come in that time and how it can continue to evolve in the future.

The HGCA will exhibit at the event in its new guise as AHDB Cereals and Oilseeds including more than 200 variety plots of recommended and candidate varieties, plus a range of research projects to view.

One example is its work on blackgrass. “We are putting a lot of effort into better understanding what’s going on and how to help growers manage the problem,” says Mr Handley.

Also at the event, Niab Tag will be offering tips on cover crops, with phacelia, oats and vetch, crimson clover, medick and radish plots featuring alongside guidance to improve the effectiveness of cover cropping strategies.

“Cover crops can count towards CAP greening measures so there is significant interest in the subject, particularly in how to make a return on investment,” says Niab Tag’s farming systems specialist Ron Stobart.
