Harvest 2015: Nearly half UK wheat cut, 25% of spring barley complete
Nearly half the winter wheat and a quarter of the spring barley is now cut in the UK with winter barley and oilseed rape largely complete apart from in northern areas.
Yield estimates for winter wheat and spring barley are above long-term averages following the higher yield trends of winter barley and oilseed rape, reported crop scientist group Adas.

Overall, some 55% of the UK combinable crop area has been cut according to Adas’ latest weekly report up to Tuesday 25 August.
This includes 99% of winter barley, 95% of oilseed rape, 45% of winter wheat and 25% of spring barley.
The winter barley and oilseed rape harvest is almost complete with just small areas left to harvest in Scotland and northern England.
Some 80% of wheat is cut in the eastern region but the harvest is yet to start in north east England and Scotland.
Over half the spring barley has been cut in southern and eastern areas of England, but there is only 10% cut in northern England and Scotland.
The weather in the week 19-25 August was unsettled with heavy spells of rainfall which affected most regions during the week, the Adas report said.
- Winter barley – 99% of the crop is harvested with average yields of 7.2-7.4t/ha, a 10-14% rise on the 10-year average of 6.5t/ha. Quality is generally good with variable specific weights and low screenings.
- Oilseed rape – 95% of the crop is cut with average yields of 3.6-3.8t/ha, a 6-12% rise on the 10-year average of 3.4t/ha. Quality is generally good with oil contents 42-48%.
- Winter wheat – 45% of the crop is combined with average yields at 8.3-8.6t/ha, a rise of 6-10% above the 10-year average of 7.8t/ha. Quality is good with average specific weights of 78kg/hl, hagberg 290 and protein contents from Group 1 and Group 2 milling wheats at 12.6%.
- Spring barley – 25% of the crop is in the barn with yields at 5.9-6.2t/ha, 9-15% above the 10-year average of 5.4t/ha. Quality is good with average specific weights of 67kg/hl and nitrogen content of 1.5%.
- Oats – 40% of the crop is off the field with average yields of 5.7t/ha in line with the 10-year average.
