One large north Lincolnshire estate is producing a “mixed bag” of results from its winter barley harvest in terms of yield and specific weight quality.

Chris Baylis, head of farming at Hall Farm, Stainton le Vale, said harvesting winter barley started on 16 July and the combines are now racing through the crop between showers.

There is 425ha of winter barley to cut on the 3,600ha estate on the northern Lincolnshire Wolds estate with some heavier land by the River Humber.

“Results have been a mixed bag due to lodging from storm damage in June, which has just taken the shine off the harvest,” he told Farmers Weekly.

The hybrid six-row variety Bazooka showed excellent results, yielding 9.5t/ha with a specific weight of 66kg/hl, but the variety Volume was lower due to lodging and ended up yielding 7-8t/ha with a lower specific weight of 58-63kg/hl.

The farm has now moved into cutting the two-row variety Glacier with a better yield of 8.8t/ha at a specific weight of 69kg/hl.

The estate, owned by Sir Richard Sutton, is based some six miles north-east of Market Rasen.
