Cockerel comb proposed as dairy additive
The phrase “Extract of cockerel comb” could soon be seen in the ingredients section of dairy products following an application by a Spanish company to the Food Standard Agency to market cockerel comb extract as a novel food ingredient.
The nutritional products company, Bioiberica, says in its application to the FSA that cockerel combs are used in traditional dishes in some European countries.
According to Bioiberica cockerel, or rooster, comb extract is high in sodium hyaluronate which helps to lubricate and cushion joints and can be used in treating a variety of joint-related problems. Currently the company only plans to use the additive in dairy products such as including milk, yoghurt and fromage frais.
