Halal producer invests in growth

One of the UK’s oldest halal poultry producers says it is reaping the benefits of a £4m investment in its main processing plant, with increased orders and recognition from the industry as the halal sector expands.

Gafoor Poultry Products Ltd has recently received British Retail Consortium Global Food Standard accreditation after a modernisation programme, which saw the company bring facilities up to UK and EU enviromental standards and introduce more automation.

Previously, Gafoor’s Preston processing facility has been at the centre of complaints by local residents regarding smells eminating from the factory. In the last two years, it has also been on the UK Border Agency’s radar, with officers arresting 33 men and women believed to be illegal immigrants.

About 450,000 birds a week are processed at the factory, with 80% of birds sourced locally. Garfoor has also expanded into primary production, purchasing farms in the area.
